The Dermaplaning Low-Down

Dermaplaning is all the rage with celebrities, and for good reason—it’s one of my favorite affordable, non-invasive skin care treatments we offer at Cole’s Salon. But for how awesome it is, not a lot of people know about it. So what exactly is it?

Here’s the low-down on all things dermaplaning:

Dermaplaning 101
Dermaplaning is a safe and effective method of exfoliation that utilizes a medical grade blade to scrape off dead skin and peach fuzz—revealing a smooth, supple, and radiant complexion with just one treatment.

Dermaplaning is beneficial for anyone with rough and dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, and those with fine lines and wrinkles. Removing the epidermal skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers.

The Perfect Complement to Other Skin Services
Dermaplaning removes that barrier of dead and dry cells to let your skin drink in moisturizing serums and anti aging creams more efficiently. Using the treatment in conjunction with a chemical peel allows products to penetrate more effectively and gives better results with every treatment.

Because dermaplaning creates a smoother skin surface and removes the peach fuzz that can interfere with makeup application, cosmetics glide on beautifully to create the seamless and poreless look of a magazine cover. Pro tip: Get this treatment done before a big event such as your wedding to get that perfect glow and to have your makeup go on like butter!

Common Dermaplaning Questions
When introduced to dermaplaning, most clients have a lot of questions. Here are the most frequently asked questions, along with answers.

Q: Is dermaplaning safe?
A: If performed by a licensed and experienced esthetician, there is no risk. It’s also safe for nursing and expectant mothers! Unlike other types of skin exfoliation that may use chemicals that will be absorbed by your skin, a dermaplane treatment offers a beautiful exfoliation that is chemical free.

Q: Does dermaplaning hurt?
A: Not at all…dermaplaning actually feels good. It’s a very relaxing experience.

Q: How often can this procedure be performed?
A: Since dermaplaning removed about three weeks of accumulated dead skin, it’s best to wait about three to four weeks in between treatments.

Q: What can I expect?
A: The procedure is painless and there is no associated downtime. Makeup can be applied immediately afterward. The use of sunscreen is strongly recommended to protect your fresh layer of skin.

Q: Will my hair grow back thicker?
A: No, your hair will come back the same way it was before, yet you will indeed feel it when it grows back if you’re not used to having it removed that way.

Q: Is Dermaplaning safe if I have moles or other skin lesions?
A: There are some contraindications and consultations are recommended.

Waxing and threading have made it seem like in order for hair removal to be effective, it has to hurt. That is so not the case with dermaplaning, which is entirely painless but just as effective.
