Survive Summer in Style: Our Ultimate Guide to Summertime Beauty

Minnesotans wait all winter for the three brief (and beautiful) months of summer, but those gorgeous sunny days often come with intense humidity, out-of-nowhere thunderstorms and sky-high temperatures. If you’ve got a working AC in your home and car, you’re probably fine with that, but even the most blissful days spent lakeside on a warm July day can wreak havoc on your beauty routine. If you’ve ever stood in your bathroom with sweat dripping down your back as you curled your hair, you know what we’re talking about. Summer is amazing, but its side effects aren’t always so great.

If you want to make this season a breeze and feel your best from July through mid-September, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite hot-day beauty hacks to get you through the dog days of summer.

Heatless Hairstyles

There’s nothing worse than battling with hot tools when the temperature climbs past 85 degrees, and when the humidity rises right along with it, well…any curly-haired friend knows what happens then. It can be tempting to battle the frizz by blow-drying or straightening your hair into submission, but why waste a beautiful day fighting with the flat iron? Go heatless and save time so you can play in the sun!

If you’ve got naturally curly hair that’s prone to frizz, you may want to consider adding a more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to your routine. Bumble and bumble’s Curl Shampoo and Curl Custom Conditioner or Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner set the stage for frizz-free curls, and Bumble’s Don’t Blow It air dry crème helps depuff your hair even in humidity. Wash, condition and add a little styling cream, then gently scrunch your hair and try to refrain from messing with it as it dries; the more you touch your hair, the frizzier it gets.

If you’ve got straight or wavy hair, add waves with this easy old school trick. Wash and condition your hair as usual, then add a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to damp hair. Braid into two loose braids and let hair dry. If you can French braid, go for it; different braids will give you different textures. Once it’s totally dry, take the braids out and gently separate your hair using your hands, then mist your new waves with an anti-frizz finishing spray like Oribe’s Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray. Done and done.

If there’s any time to try the beach waves look, it’s now. A salt spray is a must-have in any styling routine, and we’re big fans of the classic: Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray. Spray it on your damp hair and scrunch and twist in sections for super-cool beachy waves. If you need a little extra moisture, try their Surf Infusion, which contains oil for a softer finish. Of course, if all else fails, there’s always the topknot — a tried-and-true summertime favorite that always looks great, especially with bright pink lipstick, a subtle tan and some aviator shades.

Melt-Proof Makeup

There’s nothing worse than feeling your makeup slide down your face on a hot, sunny day, especially when you’re sipping drinks on a patio or at an outdoor wedding. Consider lightening up your routine with a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation, and spot-conceal just where you need to. Powder is a must when it’s warm out, but it can feel cakey, so don’t overdo it; Jane Iredale’s formulas give great coverage without feeling too heavy.

Swap your matte lipstick for a fun gloss in a bright shade, and if lash extensions aren’t your thing, add RevitaLash to your routine for longer, fuller lashes so you can go sans mascara. Opt for a gel-based facial moisturizer instead of a heavy cream.

The ultimate summertime beauty essential? Sunscreen! Don’t forget your SPF, even when it’s overcast. Luckily for you, many Jane Iredale products come with SPF, so you’re getting your sun protection as you apply your daily makeup. Just remember to reapply throughout the day, especially when you’re spending a great deal of time in the sun.

Rinse and Refresh

When it’s time to reset after fun in the sun, keep the summer vibes going in the shower. We’re obsessed with Oribe’s Côte d’Azur Replenishing Body Wash and Restorative Body Crème, which smells like a gorgeous day on the ocean and restore much-needed moisture and radiance to your summertime skin. If you’re at the cabin, we love Aveda’s Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser as a one-step wash’n’go duo that works for everyone in the fam. Use them in the summer and pull them out come winter to get a dose of sunshiney memories when January temps chill your bones.

We hope you enjoy your summer, and remember to show us all those selfies you took when you’re back in the salon!
