The Perks of Postpartum Massage

The baby is finally here! Yay! Now all of those discomforts of pregnancy are just going to magically melt away, right? Unfortunately, being a new mom brings on many new challenges for the body, mind, and spirit. But postpartum massage can help!

In general, postpartum massage:

  • Reduces aches and stress experienced during pregnancy and labor;
  • Decreases muscle tension related to nursing and other activities;
  • May help in returning the body to pre-pregnancy posture and alignment;
  • May provide emotional support, because let’s face it—mothering is hard.
  • Following a Cesarean Section, postpartum massage may aid the healing process by:

  • Reducing the formation of scar tissue;
  • Increasing circulation, helping to avoid developing blood clots; and
  • Relieving backaches related to epidurals or positioning during surgery.
  • Massage may be an important part of returning a woman to her pre-pregnancy equilibrium by increasing endorphin levels, balancing hormones, increasing blood flow and reducing stress, anxiety and depression.

    And massages benefit babies, too! When mothers receive prenatal and postpartum massage, studies show they touch their babies more often.

    These babies thrive because they:

  • May develop more quickly;
  • Exhibit greater social skills; and/or
  • Cultivate better immunity.
  • If nothing else, a postnatal massage will give you some time alone. Remember, moms need nurturing as much as their babies do!
