February is American Heart Month—a tradition that began with President Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1964. Diseases of the heart are the #1 killer in the United States. The Heart Month campaign aims to bring awareness to risk factors linked with these diseases. The American Heart Association warns against the risks of high blood pressure, which can lead to cardiovascular issues including stroke, heart disease and kidney failure.

Two separate studies in the International Journal of Preventative Medicine found that regular massage therapy sessions were successful in significantly lowering the blood pressure in those who received treatment. Researchers reported the effects lasted up to four weeks. Massage has also been found to reduce stress and, in turn, levels of cortisol. There is increasing evidence that cortisol contributes to cardiovascular risk.
