Dry Shampoo A-Z

Dry shampoo is basically our favorite hair-centric invention of all time. How did we live without it? It’s changed our lives in more ways than one—it saves time in the morning, it allows you to extend that great blowout one more day, it adds texture to hair before styling updos, and it can refresh your sweaty gym hair in two seconds. Dry shampoo also helps preserve your color by giving you the power to skip a shampoo more frequently. Amazing, right?

We’re sure you’ve tried a dry shampoo or two, but maybe you haven’t found the right one for you yet. That’s where we come in! The brands we love at Cole’s Salon have their own dry shampoos, and each one is great in its own special way. We’ll fill you in on the best bets for you.

If you’re feeling fancy

Opt for Oribe’s Gold Lust Dry Shampoo, an aerosol formula that instantly erases grease and buildup while adding a bit of softness and shine to your style. It gets the job done beautifully and it smells incredible—that Oribe “Cote d’Azur” scent is totally addictive, so you’ll want to spray all day.

If you change up your style often

Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray is the best of both worlds. It soaks up any greasiness like a dry shampoo but it ALSO adds extra volume and a sexy, undone texture that reminds us of Victoria’s Secret models walking the runway. It doesn’t make your hair feel sticky or tacky, either. It’s become a cult classic for a reason, and if you’re addicted to changing up your style or love to try new updos or braids, you’ll love the grip Dry Texturizing Spray provides.

If you’re eco-friendly

Aveda’s Dry Shampoo hit shelves in 2015 and brand devotees were so excited to finally get a dry shampoo, Aveda-style. Unlike other dry shampoos, Aveda’s version is aerosol-free (AKA eco-friendly) and “puffs” out product. It’s a bit tricky to use at first, but we’re happy to show you how it works at your next appointment. The formula itself is a lightweight powder that instantly refreshes your look and is awesome for styling too. Plus, it smells like their famous Shampure aroma, and who can resist that?

If you’re craving some New York City style

Bumble and bumble’s Prêt-à-powder is a stylist’s go-to because it gives hair workable texture that’s ideal for styling. It comes in two delivery systems, a powder and a spray, so you can choose what you like best. (They also offer a more nourishing version of the spray if you’ve got dry or damaged hair.) One of our fave ways to use the powder version is to sprinkle it onto a paddle brush and brush it through hair. If you’re an expert braider, Prêt-à-powder might help you create some cool new looks.

If you need extra volume

Technically, Aveda’s Pure Abundance Potion isn’t a dry shampoo, but this crazy little product—a blend of wet and dry—acts like one while it gives hair an extra dose of volume and texture.

If you have colored hair

The geniuses at Bumble and bumble offer Hair Powder in a blonde shade and a brunette color so you can disguise your roots while dry cleansing your hair. So smart, right? A pro-tip: definitely try them out and use a light hand at first, just in case.

If your hair needs extra love

What in the world is a dry conditioner? Sounds weird, doesn’t it? Aveda launched their Shampure Thermal Dry Conditioner in the spring of 2017 and we’re obsessed with it. It adds softness and heat protection from your mid lengths to your ends and it’s basically impossible to spritz on too much. It’s not dry, per se, but we think it’s a great partner to your favorite dry shampoo.

Still unsure about dry shampoo or need a crash course on how they work? We’d love to show you how it works at your next appointment!
