Ask the Beauty Expert: Fighting Frizz, Wearing Sunscreen & Keeping Makeup in Place

ji-eye-shaderHave a skin, hair, or makeup problem that you just can’t solve? As a cosmetology school graduate, former stylist of 13 years and now a Retail and Service Advisor at Cole’s Salon—I know a thing or two about helping people love their look AND themselves. That’s why I’m thrilled to introduce a new series called Ask the Beauty Expert, where I take your most challenging beauty questions and give you all the answers.

The first three Q&As are below—check them out and then let me know what questions you have!

Question #1: Fighting Frizz

Q: I have naturally curly hair. I really struggle with frizz during humid summer months. I want to keep my routine pretty simple, but I am wondering what you would suggest to help me manage my mane!

A: SO many people struggle with this regardless of hair type! But curly hair, in particular, has a rough go. I have a few suggestions for you depending on if you have a preference on product texture.

  • Bumble & Bumble Curl Anti-Humidity Gel-Oil: The name says it all! While a “gel-oil” might sound intimidating, it’s not! This product is simply amazing! This frizz-fighting gelee combines the hold of a gel with the hydration of an oil – for glossy, elongated curls with movement. This is geared towards medium to thick textures, however, my daughter has natural ringlet curls that are fine and this isn’t too heavy for her! Just use a smaller amount if you hair texture is fine. *Put into wet hair and air dry or diffuse with a dryer.
  • Oribe Curl Control Silkening Creme: If you like using a creme in your curls then you will LOVE this! Definitely my favorite curl creme we offer. Defines and shapes curls with the perfect balance of hold and moisture. This will fight frizz all day while also giving your locks UV protection (important for color treated hair!) and hydration. This has a satin finish and that oh so luxurious Oribe scent. *Put into wet hair and air dry or diffuse with a dryer.
  • Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray: Miami-tested game changer! Now this is something for anyone, regardless of style or hair type! This finishing spray shields hair from humidity and frizz on the sultriest of days (and nights), protecting your curls or blowout. You get UV protection from this product as well! Use this last in your hair care routine before you walk out the door. You can also find this in a convenient purse size.

Question #2: Wearing Sunscreen

Q: I know wearing sunscreen is important, especially for my face, but what order should I apply it in my product routine? Does it go on before moisturizer and makeup, or after?

A: That’s a great question! Luckily for us, we can find sunscreen in so many more products than ever with different delivery options making protecting our skin quick and easy. I have 2 different routines. My ‘going to work’ look and my ‘day off’ look. You might be similar in that! I’ll tell you each to make sure I answer your question for any day.

Going to work: After washing my face and using my treatment serums, I use a tinted moisturizer from Jane Iredale (SPF 15). On top of that, I use Jane’s Pressed Powder (SPF 20). If you don’t want a tinted moisturizer, there are options for other moisturizers with SPF. Many makeup lines now include some SPF in their products as well so it makes protecting your skin super easy!

Day off: Again, after washing my face and using serums, I put the Image Tinted Moisturizer on top (SPF 30). I like that one for days off to even out my skin tone without needing makeup and I love the higher level of SPF since I won’t be layering makeup on top. If I know I’m going to be outside for an extended period, I definitely bring added sunscreen (like the Image Pure Mineral Sunscreen Spray) for more protection and to reapply later.

If you don’t have SPF in your moisturizer or your makeup, I would highly suggest trying something that does! Takes care of two things at once and who doesn’t want fewer things to worry about?!

Question #3: Keeping Makeup in Place

Q: My skin type is on the oily side and during summer it’s at its worst. My makeup stays on fine in the morning, but towards mid-day, I feel like all my hard work is sliding off my face. Is there something I could use to help keep my makeup in place?

A: First of all, I know what you’re talking about because I have the same skin type! The struggle is real! There are a couple of products I have in mind that you can use. Before I get into that, I want to point out that sometimes when your skin is oily, it can be from lack of natural hydration. If your skin is thirsty, it will produce more oil to combat that! I have noticed that when I am drinking enough water, and using proper skin care, my oil production levels off. I would love for you to stop in sometime and chat with me about what you are currently using for skin care and we can fill in the gaps together. You might need a routine that includes more hydration!

Now, on to products you can use right away to help with your makeup. Our makeup line, Jane Iredale, has a facial primer to put on after moisturizer and before makeup called Smooth Affair for Oily Skin. This will do multiple things for you: It will even out your skin tone, minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines, soothe blemishes and reduce shine. I use this everyday I put makeup on and if I forget, I notice. The other product I would suggest from Jane Iredale is the Beyond Matte HD Matifying Powder. This will eliminate shine, refine the appearance of pores and give a smooth, matte finish. You can keep this in your purse and use when you start to see shine coming through.

Phew! I feel like we covered a lot. Now I want to know what beauty challenges I can solve for you. Shoot me an email at kate@colessalon.com, and your question may be featured in a future Ask the Beauty Expert blog post!

xo,
Kate
