10 Ways to Fight Frizzy Hair This Summer

That time of year is here. The air is heavy and damp and your hair has a mind of its own when it comes to poofy, frizzy hair! Good news: I have a solid game plan to keep your hair smooth and sleek this summer.

But first—a quick lesson in what causes frizz: Dry, porous hair sucks up moisture from the humid air, which causes the hair shaft to swell and kink all over the place. And no matter how straight or thin your hair is, we’re all susceptible to the fuzz.

So, to prevent your hair from acting like a sponge, here are a few tips and tricks to help you get through these hot, humid days.

1. Reduce the amount of time towel drying your hair

Who knew, right?! Turns out, that friction causes your cuticles to fray and can result in unwanted frizz.

2. Use a sulfate-free shampoo

The suds might feel satisfying, but those extra bubbles can often act like harsh detergents in the hair. Yes, sulfate-free shampoos often do not suds up as much, but are still doing the needed cleanse. Feel like you just can’t give up the suds? Try a shampoo by Oribe—their shampoos contain no harsh sulfates and still give you the satisfying lather (and smell so good)!

3. Shampoo less

Let your hair’s natural oils do the work of protecting and taming! Learn how to get the most out of your wash and non-wash days here.

4. Try a co-wash

Co-washing is a way of getting your conditioning cleanse all in one and reducing that extra step of a shampoo. Our go-to co-wash is Cleansing Creme for Moisture and Control by Oribe. It’s non-foaming conditioning formula is rich in purifying oils, citrus fruit extracts, and refreshing water-mint essence to gently clean strands and energize the scalp while protecting color, calming frizz and restoring moisture. The result: complete silky softness and no tangles!

5. Don’t skip conditioner

At some point or another you might have tried the wrong conditioner—it was too heavy or made your feel too oily. Don’t give up! Conditioners have come a long way, and there are many options available to give your hair the needed moisture and help smooth and seal your cuticle.

6. Sleep on it

If you don’t have time for morning styling sessions—and to limit the damage caused by the blow-dryer—shampoo at night, and then apply a styling cream from roots to tips. Comb your hair into a tight bun at the nape of your neck, and secure it with an elastic. When you wake up, simply remove the elastic and run your fingers through to separate your new smooth waves.

7. Smooth it out with treatments

While conditioners are a great product for the outside of your hair, a deep conditioner or leave-in masque helps penetrate the inside of the cuticle and work its way out. Don’t have time to spare waiting for a masque in the shower? No worries, there are masques that you can apply to dry hair and rinse out in your normal shower routine.

8. Go ionic

Finding a blow dryer with ionic technology can help dry your hair faster and lock in moisture for longer. I always recommend the ghd hairdryer—this top-notch dyer not only has the ionic technology, but has two speeds, three heat settings, and best of all, can do all of this with only 1,600 watts so you can feel good using it.

9. Find the right brush

Our Ergo professional brushes offer ionic technology to help keep hair shiny and less frizzy. They also help hair dry quicker, which helps keep the heat styling to a minimum. This reduces heat damage AND keeps our hair healthy!

10. Don’t forget about your styling products

When styling hair wet, some products that we love are leave-in conditioners (our favorite is Supershine by Oribe) and hair oils (try Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil by Bumble and bumble). When hair is dry, try a dry conditioner (we like Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Dry-Oil Spray) and lightweight finishing creams (try Oribe’s AirStyle Flexible Finish Cream).
