Ask the Beauty Expert: How Do I Get My Curls to Stay?

It’s a problem anyone with naturally straight hair can relate to: curls that fall halfway through the day (or sooner). I get this complaint from readers all the time. Why bother spending so much time achieving the perfect curl if they’re just going to disappear hours later?

The problem: Why your curls fall

Falling curls often occur when there’s a lack of holding product in your hair. Products with hold are crucial in creating structure for your curls, which helps keep them in place throughout the day. They’re applied to wet hair and blown in (e.g., a mouse, gel or styling creme). Once your hair is dry, you then layer on a styling spray before curling. Some of my fave products for this are B.b Thickening Full Form Soft Mousse, Oribe Gel Serum, Oribe Creme For Style, and Aveda Confixor Liquid Gel.

The fix: Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray

Oribe makes a product called Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray that, when used properly, holds a curl unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I say “when used properly” because if it’s used incorrectly, you’ll likely not get the results you’re looking for.

Oribe’s Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray is designed to be used on dry hair, section by section, immediately before you curl. It’s not designed to be sprayed one time all over your head and then styled. It feels a bit sticky when you first spray a section, but once heat is applied, that stickiness disappears and leaves your hair with unbeatable curl memory. It also provides thermal protection to prevent damage to your hair. Talk about a win-win!

Now, if you are thinking Kate, I don’t want to spend all that time spraying down section by section before I curl, fair enough. It does admittedly take more time. That said, Oribe’s Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray creates curls that last, and isn’t that what you wanted? After all, if you’re regularly curling your hair, and regularly seeing those curls droop by lunch, what’s the point of curling to begin with? I recommend investing a little extra time in a product that does its job. Then, on days when you’re running late, stick to medium-hold hair sprays that require less time and are a bit more user-friendly.

I hope this helps you find the beautiful, lasting curls you are looking for!
