5 Unexpected Colors We’re Loving for Fall

When you think of fall colors, what comes to mind? We bet it’s visions of plum, mustard yellow, pumpkin orange, deep burgundy, and camel beige — similar hues to those you find in nature this time of year. By the time fall rolls around, we’re thrilled to start wearing our autumnal hues both in our wardrobes and our beauty routines, but there’s something so fun and exciting about changing things up and adding a dash of unexpected color to our fall outfits, hair, and makeup. This year, we’re feeling inspired by a variety of colors from dusty pastels to hot pink (yes, you read that right) and will be incorporating them into our looks all season long.

Hot pink

It’s not just for summer anymore. Rock it on your cheeks with a heavy-handed flush of fuschia or keep your go-to summer pink lipstick in your bag throughout the fall. Monochromatic makeup was a huge trend on the fall runways, so if you’re feeling adventurous, try a wash of pink color on your lids, a hint on your cheeks, and a pop of pink on your lips. Pink highlights or a full head of pink color is a new classic; if you’re not quite ready to go full hot pink, warm up your color with a hint of bubblegum or a bit of rose gold to dip a toe into the trend.

Wear it when: You’re feeling a little blue, the sky is cloudy, and you need an instant boost of positivity.

Crimson red

Match your favorite red fall sweater to your lipstick this season — and when we say red, we’re talking scarlet red, not burgundy or muted rust red. Bright crimson was a major player in the fashion world, so slick on some scarlet lipstick when you need a confidence boost. If you’re really feeling the hue, add a few streaks of red to your color or take the plunge into the redhead world. It’s fun, we promise!

Wear it when: Asking for a raise, going on a hot date

Indigo blue

Swap your black liner out for cobalt or indigo blue; a blue cat-eye always feels fresh and unexpected. Since we’re back to masks in many places, blue liner is a fun way to let your eyes do the talking. If a Halloween-ready black manicure isn’t for you, try a slightly softer deep indigo or navy mani-pedi for an elegantly spooky yet classic vibe.

Wear it when: Having friends over for dinner, Friday morning school drop off

Olive green

It makes sense that a deep olive green would be a trendy fall color; it’s practically perfect for cool days and pumpkin patch outings. This season, match your manicure to your favorite army green jacket or pants and try a dusty olive green on your nails. Get creative with hair accessories, and try an olive or hunter green scarf, scrunchie, or headband for your next trip to the apple orchard.

Wear it when: Rooting for your favorite football team, meeting a friend for patio happy hour while the weather is still warm

Lilac

This springy shade is having a moment in the fall. Lilac plays well with so many fall hues, like burgundy, olive green, and chocolate brown; it’s an unexpected way to add a hint of fun to your outfit or your beauty look. If you have dark hair, try a lilac headband or ribbon for a pretty contrast. A subtle hint of shimmery lilac shadow is a surprising choice for fall and a cheeky way to throw it back to the Y2K days that are trending on TikTok.

Wear it when: Feeling sweet and sassy, welcoming the weekend
